I escaped from the battlefields,
Running through the hills.
I saw a young soldier
From another nation,
Fighting for the exact same cause
I had taken up arms for.
He asked me, “Why are you leaving the field?”
I looked back and said, “Because I want to live.”
“Live…?” he echoed, looking away.
“On a land that is no longer ours,
Speaking a tongue we cannot call our own?”
“I just don’t want to die!” I cried.
“I have seen the graves,” he said,
“Of every man who refused to fight.
But not me-I will fight until my last drop of blood
Touches this holy land.
I was born Free
And free I will die.”
